Welcome to Carrefour-Africa .org

We believe in Ubuntu mind set and practice to provide culturally aware supportive services to repair communal relationships, to prevent escalation of conflicts and to provide a type of education that unleashes each individual’s potential.

OUR VISION:
A dynamic and engaged African Canadian Community in Alberta

UBUNTU PHILOSOPHY: I AM BECAUSE YOU ARE

It means that each one’s success has somewhat been shaped by others and the environment around. That is the reason behind sharing success of some and the failures of others.

The Afro-Canadian population is very diverse in culture and background.

Those who were born out of wedlock, grew up with an illegitimate label and status.

Those who grew up orphans were victims of pandemics and civil wars.

Those who grew up in refugee camps experienced scarcity of resources and extreme poverty.

To serve such a diverse population requires an awareness of their culture and background and an adapted counselling services to effectively be a resource to their needs.

Such attempt has at times ended with negative outcome for both the individual members of families, which is sometimes considered systemic racism.

Carrefour Africa aims to collaborate with existing family serving agencies and suggest an innovative approach to serve specific needs of these individuals and families.

About Carrefour Africa

Dealing with the challenges of today requires problem-solvers who bring different perspectives and are willing to take risks. Carrefour-Africa Bureau emerged out of a pursuit to inspire and support the community, and a desire for actions to speak louder than words. Established in 2019, Carrefour-Africa Bureau came in response of growing concerns about families and youths being disconnected following culture conflicts and the disparity of outcomes for the African Canadian community. We are an organization driven by progressive ideas, bold actions, and a strong foundation of support. Contact us to learn more and get involved.

Programs & Services

Carrefour Africa aimes to strengthen relationships among family members. Our  programs intend to preserve the unity of the family, to prevent escalation of conflicts, and to access equitable resolution of conflicts that eliminates criminalization of parents and placements of children outside their community and culture.

FAMILY PRESERVATION

Family preservation programs recognizes the benefit of Ubuntu in the resolution of conflicts as well as the negative outcomes of the victimization and criminalization associated with the individual justice system within the same family. Family preservation program intend to eliminate the bias in the substantiation of allegations and to reduce the imbalance between the prosecution system and the self-represented accused.

YOUTH SUPPORT

Youth Skills Development intends to unpack poverty as the most single determinant of cultural conflicts between youth and their parents among families of new comers. Youth Skills Development is a one on one or in group skills building where youth learn the culture, the  financial literacy and the pacific conflict resolution. Youth Skills development assists young adults out of foster homes to reintegrate effectively back in their family and community. Youth Skill development offers tutoring services to youth who have aged out of school without access to post-secondary education.

FAMILY COACHING

We see every challenge as an opportunity, and this initiative helps us ensure that our partners are better prepared to manage the unique situations they find themselves in. We are invested in an innovative approach that empowers our community and delivers the support they need, when they need it.  Poverty remains the single most source of conflicts in Black Canadian Communities. Poverty has also been a reason for intervention by Child, youth and Family Services.
Money matters is workshop designed for youth and parents. It is designed to prevent domestic violence and to repair broken relationships.
Coaches are available to respond to crisis within homes. They promote safety of children and youth within their homes and coach parents to avoid behaviors that might place the family at risk. Coaches may provide unbiased testimonies where applicable.

RESPITE

The respite program is designed to respond to needs of vulnerable families. Through our Respite Services, we have the potential to make a real and positive change in the community.  At Carrefour Africa,  blended families and families whose members are reuniting in Canada after a long time of separation due to  the immigration process are treated as vulnerable families because their likelihood of desintegration is high. The respite period is used to reduce tensions, to provide information, to address the gap in expectations and to address the mental alienation of children where applicable.
